CBD and the PGA: Is it Legal for Pro Golfers to Use CBD?

More than a dozen pro golfers are using cannabidiol (CBD) for its potential to help with the physical and mental strain of the sport. Recently, some big names in golf, such as Scott McCarron, Lucas Glover, and Bubba Watson have started endorsing CBD. This came after the PGA warned players about the risks of CBD and lack of government regulation.

Can PGA Athletes Use CBD | CBD News FeedHowever, the PGA follows the World Anti-Doping Agency’s guidelines for illegal and performance-enhancing drugs no longer includes CBD on its list of prohibited substances. Along with endorsements, Golf Digest interviewed several caddies and coaches on the in the Pro Golfers’ Association and found that more than a dozen players are regularly using CBD.

The agency’s concern is that players will test positive for THC. However, quality CBD products come from hemp and have .3% of THC or less in accordance with U.S. law.

Bubba Watson, one of the players currently endorsing a CBD brand told Golf Digest,

“I’ve had doctors involved to do my research and see what companies out there make a product that’s safe for me and safe for my family. It was a no-brainer,” Watson says. “There’s no bad stuff in it, there are no chemicals in there that will mess you up or make you fail a drugs test. There are certain companies we trust.”

The PGA has confirmed that no players have tested positive to date for CBD.
